Dr Terence Wright
Reader in Critical, Historical & Theoretical Studies in Visual Art
Background
Terence Wright was appointed to a Readership in Theoretical Studies in Visual Art at the University of Ulster in 2003. Formerly he was Professor in Photography: Media and Art Theory at Kunsthøgskolen i Bergen, Bergen, Norway and Senior Research Officer, Refugee Studies Centre, University of Oxford where he ran the project "Moving Images: the Media Representation of Refugees". He has taught Visual Media (theory & practice) at the Department of Architecture, University of Cambridge; Architectural Association School of Architecture, London; and the UK's National Film and Television School. He is a Fellow of Royal Anthropological Institute; a member of International Editorial Board of the journal Visual Studies; and a member of the Visual Anthropology section of European Association of Social Anthropologists.
Education
He took a Dip AD in Fine Art at Newport College of Art & Design (1974) and an MA in Fine Art at Chelsea School of Art & Design (1975). While he worked as a freelance photographer he studied part-time at the University of London for his PhD on 'The Self-Reflexive Attitude to Photography' (1986) and he was awarded a Master of Studies degree in Ethnology and Museum Ethnography by the University of Oxford (1988).
Research Fields
Interactive Ethnography; Refugees and Humanitarian Disasters; Visual Anthropology.He runs the University of Ulster's contribution to the European Union funded Nm2 project: a collaborative research project which unites leading creative and technology experts from across Europe to develop new media forms which take advantage of the unique characteristics of broadband networks. For this project he is producing The Interactive Village an ethnography of Dolní Roven a village in the Czech Republic. He is also a partner in MIDAS and FUSION cross-border (UK & Eire) knowledge transfer projects in interactive media/documentary.
