Ms Doris Rohr
Associate Lecturer in Fine Art: Painting
Background
Born in Hameln, Germany, Doris Rohr taught for several years in art and design institutions in England, before joining Interface as Research Associate for Art in Public. Notable stops en route have been Norwich School of Art and Design, where Doris worked for seven years as Lecturer in Critical Studies (1995-2002), and Cumbria Institute of the Arts (2002-2005), as Head of the Visual Studies provision, with special investment in drawing as methodology of practice.
Education
After completing an Apprenticeship in surface ornament and pattern at the Berufsfachschule für Glas, Zwiesel, Germany, she took her BA at West Surrey College of Art and Design (BA Hons. Three-Dimensional Design), followed by taking a Master in Fine Art at Coventry University. When teaching at Norwich, Doris studied for a second MA part time at the University of Essex (MA Philosophy/Psychoanalysis).
Research Fields
An overriding concern of Doris Rohr's career path reflects on the tension of theory and practice, and how concepts relate to methodologies of practice. Phenomenological readings of place and subjectivity have informed much of her research on landscape, space and place in relation to cultural geography, and in regard to the use of methodologies of practice (drawing, lens-based, creative writing). More recently her research has also involved anthropological frameworks in relation to situated and emplaced aspects of subjective ritualistic performance. The latter is based on her long-term interest in subjectivity of personal memory in relation to history.
